# WHAT TO TRY — Item A-14 · Universal Translator ("Phrasebook Teal")

**Owner-test staging, per the Owner-Test Rule.** Two things to try, in order.
Total owner time: ~3 minutes for #1 now; ~10 minutes for #2 when you pick a phone up.

## 1. Read the packet and play with the phrasebook (available now, ~3 minutes)

Open: `index.html` in this folder
(`~/workspace/horizon-works/q-branch-2026-10-31/stream-a/a14-translator/`) — any browser, works offline. The full packet text is `PACKET-A14.md` in the same folder.

- **Skim the two lanes.** Lane 1 is your phones (offline packs + conversation mode); Lane 2 is the house bench (Argos Translate) for documents. The split is: phones for talking, bench for reading.
- **Tap the phrasebook cards.** 33 everyday phrases — greetings, thanks, directions, help, food, numbers 1–10. Tap a card to see its Spanish pairing, tap again to hide it, or use "Show all Spanish pairings." It is labeled SAMPLE — everyday phrases only, simple standard translations.
- **Judge the limits section the way you'd rely on it.** DRAFT-grade output, fewer languages offline, and medical/legal conversations need a human interpreter — all printed on the page, not buried.

## 2. The first-run sitting — one phone (~10 minutes, when you're ready — not before)

This is the run that settles the packet's **UNPROVEN** stamp. Muse walks you through it one step at a time (Code Breakdown Rule — each step explained before you do it):

1. **Pick one phone** — Android or iPhone — and follow that family's section of the packet (§2 for Google Translate, §3 for Apple Translate): on Wi-Fi, download the **English** and **Spanish** offline packs.
2. **Do the airplane-mode test** (step 8 of either section): Airplane mode on, translate "Where is the bathroom?" — if it works with no connection, the offline lane is proven on that phone.
3. **Try conversation mode once** (§4): tap Conversation, say one short sentence, check that what it *heard* matches what you said.
4. **Report any step your phone showed differently.** Menu labels move between versions; your phone wins, and the difference goes into the packet's next revision — that report is what converts the packet from UNPROVEN to proven.

## What you will NOT be asked to try

- No installs from Muse, no accounts, nothing that costs money. $0 throughout — the apps and packs are already free on your phones.
- No real conversation gets trusted to it during the test — the sitting uses test sentences only. Medical or legal conversations are a human interpreter's job, permanently, packet or no packet.
